UNDERMOUNT KITCHEN SINKS

Information current as of

There are a variety of mounting options for your chosen sink installation. One option that is now popular are kitchen sinks that are undermount. They are obviously mounted beneath the countertops making it very easy to wipe spills directly into the sink without bumping into the small lip. Because its not part of the countertop itself there is still a distinct difference between the surfaces. You are still left with a lower lip on the sink rim that can easily collect dirt, food and bacteria so special care will need to be taken to be sure its properly cleaned.

These are similar to flush mounted sinks that sit at the same level as the countertop. These also have the advantage of easy counter cleanup. Similar also to the integral sink which is made of the same material as the counters.

When choosing the position of the sink you may also need to consider the various sink accessories such as chopping boards, dishracks, garbage disposals and colanders. Flush mount and undermounted sinks may not accommodate all accessories depending on their style and placement. In most cases it won't be a problem and you'll have other alternatives, but be sure to consider all factors before making your purchase. Since rimmed sinks are the most standard they are also the cheapest. The sinks are designed to be one or the other, you cannot easily convert a standard rimmed sink into an undermount.

Undermount kitchen sinks have to be installed under a material that is waterproof on both sides like granite and other stones, but not laminate materials. These are common in bathrooms, as secondary sinks and in home wet bars.

Kohler offers a lot of undermount sink options, including single and double basin choices.

Tips: When cleaning your sink for the first time also test your cleaning material to be sure it doesn't leave any stains or scratches on the sink surface by testing it in an inconspicuous location. Wipe off the surface immediately with water. Don't allow any cleaners to soak or sit very long. If the sink is stainless steel be sure to use an abrasive cleaner.
